Final Project
Brief: Durham Cathedral has a vast collection of printed books, manuscripts, documents and notes dating back to 1473 and the Durham Cathedral Library is the UK's largest in-situ medieval monastic library. With many bookstores within the country closing down and the sale of e-books and digital reading devices increasing, the question is how the codex form and today's printing techniques came about? The brief was to design a space that would both educate visitors of the story from cave drawings to kindle and showcase the Cathedrals historic artefacts whilst also providing a brief retail experience and being sympathetic to the chosen site, the Grade I Listed Cathedral Undercrofts.
Response: The BOCA museum. A state of the art museum illustrating the history of the codex. The timeline design weaves its way through the historic undercroft of the Cathedral and includes a hands-on papermaking zone and retail experience. The elevated walkway allows the exhibition design to make the most of the space whilst showcasing the vaulted architecture and protecting the stucture. The design incorporates high spec technology such as holographic models and touch screen displays that personalise the information for the reader.
